Art is for everybody

An image of the painting Collect Moments an abstract painting by Carly Gilliatt, in tones of blue with hints of earthy tones. Abstracted buildings and trees.

Someone paid me the best compliment at a recent exhibition - “the more you look the more you see”. He was talking to the person he was with but I heard and loved it and went to tell him. He then said “I don’t know anything about art” - almost like the exhibition wasn’t for him. My response was to say you don’t need to know anything about art, it’s just a question of do you like it, do you like looking at it?

It made me think. It’s not the first time I’ve heard that. Is this particular to art? I love my music but I can’t sing and I can’t play any instruments, it doesn’t stop me loving and having opinions about music.

I believe art is for everybody, my art might not be for everybody but there will be something that speaks to everybody.

Art is not just for artists

Art is not just for people who have studied art and can name their favourite artists and talk about their place in history.

Art is for everybody

Maybe before dismissing something as not for you, have a really good look - it might reveal more to you. It really just comes down to this, do you like looking a it? Does it make you feel something? Do you want to grab it and take it home and get that feeling everyday?

That is all.

That is enough.
